Abstract
Three-dimensional numerical models were developed by Technological Development Laboratory using the volumes and finite elements technique with the resources available in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to simulate steady-state heat transfer in two of the main cooling components of the Usiminas Ipatinga Blast Furnace#3: tuyere and cooler box. In this paper, the convective coefficients due to water flow were determined and, from these, the minimum acceptable values of the necessary flow for an appropriate refrigeration of those components. For the tuyeres, the internal water pressure condition was evaluated regarding variations of input flow and it was then determined the flow where the internal pressure becomes smaller than the pressure of the blast furnace. These parameters are of utmost importance in order to improve the operational stability of the reactor.
