Abstract

Existem diversas vantagens que justificam a substituição de fibras sintéticas por fibras naturais, sendo elas de caráter econômico, técnico e ambiental. Entretanto, as fibras lignocelulósicas não apresentam a mesma uniformidade dimensional que as fibras sintéticas, possuindo grande dispersão em seus valores. Em particular, trabalhos anteriores já foram realizados com o objetivo de avaliar a variação da resistência mecânica com o diâmetro, mas até agora nenhum trabalho havia sido realizado para correlacionar o diâmetro com o módulo de elasticidade. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar estatisticamente o diâmetro de um lote de fibras de bananeira, definir intervalos e, através da estatística de Weibul, analisar a dependência com o módulo de elasticidade. Os resultados revelaram uma relação inversa ajustada à uma equação hiperbólica. Além disso, observações da superfície de fratura das fibras sugerem possíveis mecanismos responsáveis por esta correlação.

 

Several economical, technical and environmental advantages are currently justifying the substitution of synthetic fibers by natural fibers. However, natural fibers obtained from plants, also known as lignocellulosic fibers, do not present the same dimensional uniformity, showing large dispersion of values, as compared to the synthetic fibers. In particular, works have been conducted to evaluate the variation of the mechanical strength with the diameter of banana fibers, but so far no work was carried out on the correlation between the diameter and the elastic modulus. Therefore, the objective of this work was to statistically characterize the diameter of a lot of banana fiber, to define intervals and, by means of the Weibull statistic, to analyze the dependence with the elastic modulus. The results revealed an inverse relation, which was adjusted to a hyperbolic equation. Moreover, fracture surface observation suggested possible mechanisms related to this correlation.
