Abstract

For foundries operating in developed countries, it is almost impossible to make money with 'small rolls". Thus, nobody from these foundries really likes producing small rolls. There is no R&D therefore no progress and no further development. Many mills buy small cast rolls as commodities, at the lowest prices. Contrary to cast rolls, mills buy very small rolls in 'high'tech" sintered hard metal at 'higher prices". The gap between cast and sintered rolls is big in every respect. Standard nodular iron offers no chance to improve roll performance to more than marginal. Whereby concerning wear, new and higher alloyed materials may give great opportunities for better cast rolls. We discussed the impact of hard carbide forming elements and the influence on wear. The development of roll materials follows the development of cutting tools. In case mill people want to improve small roll perforrnances, then they have to ask (and pay) for better rolls and they will get them, at least from capable foundries.
