Abstract

Este trabalho discute a adoção e a difusão da tecnologia de lingotamento contínuo (LC) – uma inovação radical na indústria siderúrgica. Discutimos as etapas daquele processo de inovação, desde a invenção, à introdução e difusão do LC. Enfatizamos os processos de aprendizagem tecnológica dos produtores de aço e suas implicações para a difusão de uma nova tecnologia. Assim, a revisão da literatura sobre economia da tecnologia e inovação tecnológica na siderurgia tem o objetivo de elencar conceitos que contribuam para explicar o desenvolvimento, e posterior sucesso, da tecnologia de lingotamento contínuo no mundo. O estudo dá atenção especial à identificação das dificuldades e acertos da gestão da inovação incremental na tecnologia de lingotamento contínuo. Neste sentido, acreditamos que ele contribuirá para subsidiar decisões de investimento e outras decisões estratégicas no setor siderúrgico, em particular, no que toca à introdução de futuras inovações como, por exemplo, a nova técnica de lingotamento contínuo em seções finas.

 

This paper discusses the adoption and the diffusion of the continuous casting technology (CC) – a major innovation in the iron and steel industry. We analyse the paths of innovation, from invention to introduction and diffusion of the CC technology. We also emphasize the learning process of the steel producers and their implication for the future diffusion of a new technology. A brief review of the economics of innovation literature is associated with an outlook of the technology innovations in steel production. This approach intends to explain the development and the diffusion of the continuous casting. The study gives a particular value to the failures and the success of the minor innovations in the continuous casting technology. In this sense, we discuss if the lessons from the CC experience will be useful to the management of future innovation as, for example, the new strip casting technologies. The study will also give information to the headquarters of the iron and steel industry about the investment decisions.
