Abstract

The behavior of coke degradation and unburnt pulverized coal in a lower part of blast furnace was investigated by using a coke sampler in order to elucidate the effect of coke qualities on the operation parameters. The tuyere coke samplings had been conducted 10 times in the blast furnaces of Hyundai Steel Company (HSC). From the results of visual examination and variation in thrust forces, samples were classified into 3 parts and analyzed according to the given procedure. It has been found that the coke diameter in a lower part decreased by 52~58% of charged coke. The decrement of coke size was intensified with increase in PCR, accelerating coke deterioration by burden load and gasification reaction. And the raceway depth was shortened with the accumulation of coke fine generated at the lower part. The coke fine (-3 mm) was rapidly increased up to 10~15% at the tip of the measured raceway. Along the radius, the distribution of estimated coke temperature was moved toward the tuyere side with PCR. From multiple regression analysis of data, 1% reductions of DI and CSR correspond to decrease of about 0.2 mm and 0.4 mm in coke size, respectively. Therefore it is estimated that in a large BF, CSR is more influential than DI on the coke degradation, which could be accelerated by the increase of PCR.
