Abstract
The determination of physical crack extension (∆ap) is a fundamental step in the evaluation of fracture toughness in metallic materials and is traditionally performed manually through the application of the Nine-Point Average Method prescribed by ASTM E1820 standard. However, this procedure requires skilled operators and is often time-consuming. To automate this process, a Python-based software tool was developed by integrating digital image processing techniques, artificial intelligence-assisted segmentation using the Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM2), and automatic implementation of the ASTM E1820 methodology. The proposed methodology was validated through a comparison between manual measurements performed in the software ImageJ and automated measurements obtained from fracture surfaces of different specimen geometries. The results showed differences below 2% between both approaches and a reduction of more than 85% in analysis time, demonstrating the potential of the developed tool to provide faster, more standardized, and more accessible quantitative fractographic evaluations.
