Abstract

Electro-discharge texturing (EDT) is becoming increasingly popular for producing high quality textured strip for autobody and a wide variety of steel and aluminum sheet products. This paper describes the EDT texturing and chrome plating of cold mill work rolls at NEO in Portage, USA, which are used in tandem and temper mills in various USA plants around the Great Lakes. The benefits of improvements in quality for deep drawing and paintability of exposed autobody sheet are presented along with some additional attributes seen as a result of a combination of EDT and chrome plating. Three-dimensional surface measurement is used to show the improvements that can be made in sheet quality when EDT is used in both the tandem and temper mills
