Abstract
The current landscape of global armed conflicts demands protection and autonomy, while the conventional manufacture of such systems presents challenges. In this context, honeycomb cellular structures in sandwich-type panels (MFSCPs) were produced using SAE 316L metallic powder through a Laser Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED) system, based on the optimization of volumetric energy density (VED). These structures were then subjected to ballistic testing, providing relevant results and discussions regarding the technical feasibility of the L-DED system for manufacturing lightweight vehicle protection systems (L-VPS). The results indicate that MFSCPs with reduced weight and Type II ballistic protection can be obtained.
