Abstract

Hypoeutectic Al-Ni alloys exhibit high potential for structural and thermal applications due to the high thermal stability of the Al₃Ni intermetallic phase. In this context, the present work investigated the microstructure, secondary dendritic spacing, and microhardness of an Al-3.3%Ni alloy containing 0.2%Fe, solidified in a metal mold under a high heat extraction rate. The alloy was produced from 1350 electroconductive aluminum by conventional casting and subsequently characterized by optical spectrometry, optical microscopy, and Vickers microhardness tests. The microstructural results revealed an α-Al matrix with refined dendritic morphology and interdendritic regions enriched by Al₃Ni intermetallics and Fe-rich precipitates. An average secondary dendritic spacing of 10.1 µm was observed, indicating a significant influence of the high cooling rate provided by the metal mold. The average hardness obtained was 38.1 HV, associated with the presence of intermetallics and microstructural refinement, which act as barriers to dislocation movement. The results demonstrate that the combination of rapid solidification and controlled formation of intermetallic phases promotes improved mechanical properties and microstructural stability of the Al-3.3%Ni alloy.
