Abstract

Bearing selection in any cold reduction mill is very important for the production and quality of strip or tin plate produced. There are two types of bearings available for the load carrying rolls on cold reduction mills, oil film bearings and rolling elemento bearings. In general, both are suitable for use on backup rolls within the context of design engineering theory. Practically, the past decade has proven that accuracy of rotation requirements for HAGC equipped mills has lirnited the bearing selection to keyless type oil film bearings and cylindrical roller bearings with interferente fit inner races. This paper will select both of these bearing types for a five stand tandem cold mill and compare the heat loss and temperature distribution by finite element analysis, gauge quality, bearing life. and cost. It will also include a comparison of on-gauge performance of two similar mills.
