BIOLOGICAL CONTROL APPLIED TO THE WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT (WWTP) OF THE COKE PLANT EFFLUENTS

Abstract

CST (Tubarão Steel Industry) uses a technology of activated sludge as a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) of its coke plant effluents. The control of CST’s WWTP efficiency is based on physicochemical analyses, which are asked by the State’s Environmental Agency. By the end of 2002, CST started the analytic development of its microbiological parameters to evaluate the efficiency of this technology and later correlation between it and the physicochemical results. The microbiological analysis has the advantage of being fast, and it allows the identification of the agents responsible for possible performance decreases in the WWTP besides also being an excellent indication to define some of the main controls in biological treatment. During these 16 months, it could be observed a major diversity of microorganisms such as protozoa and nitrifying bacteria in the biological sludge, this way defining possible indicators for the toxicity control and for the parameters of the process. As a result, the WWTP micro biota started absorbing the fluctuations resulted from this process, certifying all the parameters required by the State’s Environmental Agency for the Operational Permission of CST.
