Blast Furnace Optimization leads to Tremendous Cost Savings

Abstract

Permanently increasing cost pressure in the iron and steel industry means that cost-optimized operation and highest production quality along the entire process route are the key factors for competitive and profitable production. This is particularly true in the blast furnace sector where hot metal production costs are determined by the factors Productivity, Fuel consumption, Selection of raw materials and Hot metal quality. The VAI blast furnace process optimization solution is introduced, which allows to operate the process fully transparently yielding significant cost savings and quality improvements. The availability of new techniques in respect to process models, artificial intelligence, machine learning, enhanced software applications in combination with graphical user interfaces made the realization of a most advanced and effective system for blast furnace operation possible. The unique technological highlights of the VAI blast furnace optimization solution are: Closed-Loop Expert System for fully automatic blast furnace operation; Self-learning, automatic burden distribution combining artificial intelligence with mathematical models; Blast Furnace Tomographie providing a metallurgical view into the process (Kinetic process optimization model); Hearth Wear Model using finite element method for calculation of hearth wear line; Most advanced Process Models which can be easily adapted to the individual blast furnace
