Abstract

For many years, blast furnaces have continued to lead the way in the production of hot metal. But must this always remain so? Newly emerging, competing processes are putting the future of blast furnaces in doubt, and developments are also taking place in the downstream steel plant facilities which make a future without blast furnaces appear possible. The following questions therefore present themselves: Where does the blast furnace stand at present, in which direction will it evolve, where do its limits lie? How does the blast furnace compare with competing processes? What are the future prospects for the processing of hot metal in steel plants? The following comments are intended to provide answers to these questions. Attention in this respect has been devoted mainly to the plant construction and engineering aspects. Other papers presented at this conference will undoubtedly provide additional information regarding the metallurgical and operational aspects.
