Abstract
This study aimed to characterize ballistic inserts based on silicon carbide (SiC) sintered by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), with the addition of 5 vol.% metallic silicon and a sintering temperature of 1900 °C. The samples were characterized using the Archimedes method, Vickers hardness, XRD, SEM and EDS. The results indicated an apparent density of approximately 2.80 g/cm³, a relative density of 88.7%, and an apparent porosity of 3.6%. Vickers hardness ranged from 12 to 14 GPa (under loads of 0.2, 0.5, and 1 kgf), values consistent with conventional ballistic ceramics. Structural analyses indicated the predominance of the silicon carbide phase, with residual metallic silicon distributed throughout the matrix, contributing to material consolidation during sintering. The results demonstrate that SPS processing represents a promising route for producing SiC ceramics with high hardness and lower density, with potential application in ballistic inserts.
