Abstract
The selection of metallic biomaterials for hard tissue replacement is fundamentally based on the suitability of their mechanical properties to ensure structural integrity and correct load transfer to the skeleton. Commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) and the Ti-6Al-4V alloy are widely used in orthopedic endoprostheses; however, the elastic disparity between these materials and cortical bone fuels debates about the clinical longevity of the implants. This study conducted a rigorous comparative investigation of the Vickers microhardness and dynamic modulus of elasticity of both alloys, correlating the obtained indices with the biomechanical profile of the human femur. The results revealed that, although the Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibits superior hardness (357 ± 24 HV) due to solid solution hardening and biphasic effects, both metallic systems operate under an excessively high elastic threshold (~113 GPa). When compared to the elastic modulus of cortical bone (~15.68 GPa), a scenario of severe mechanical misalignment becomes evident. From the perspective of bone mechanobiology, the role of this elastic asymmetry in the manifestation of the stress shielding phenomenon, culminating in aseptic periprosthetic bone resorption, is discussed.
