Abstract
Over the last years there has been seen in hot strip mills (HSM's) a strong trend towards improvements in performance. Improvements of existing, and the development of new roll materials (which had already started at the beginning of the 90's), has resulted in carbide enhanced indefinite chill rolls, and high speed steel rolls being used in increased nurnbers. This enhancement method of rolls, particularly of chilled rolls using special carbide forming elements has proven to be alço a powerful rnethod in which to increase the wear resistance of high chrome iron and steel roll materials. The effects of carbide enhancernent in high chrornium microstructures is described in detail below. First the Influentes of carbide enhancement on roll characteristics will be shown by using data produced by use of SPC (statistical process control of rol1 production). Secondly the results of carbide enhanced high chrome work rolls introduced into service and used in roughing stands and in the front finishing stands of HSM's is also described, and the performance data discussed.
