Abstract
To improve steel cleanliness in steelmaking at Ipsco, Inc. it was clear that three areas needed attention: ensuring adequate refining period and a good boil for mixing in the furnace and also limiting slag carryover from the furnace to the ladle; ladle desulphurization by either lime mixture or calcium silicon injection, gas stirring for inclusion flotation and control of steel oxidation; ingot casting preventing reoxidation of the steel when pouring between ladle and mold. The third stage is very critical since all the benefits incurred by the previous two can be unachieved by poor ingot casting. Additionally important since Ipsco, Inc. have no continuous bottom ingot pouring and finishing, ingots are direct charged to soaking pits then stripped down and finally rolled to the proper gauge and width on the same mill line.
