Abstract

AKERS has been manufacturing cast rolls for more than 160 years and has been exporting rools since 1887. Since then there has naturally been major developments in both cast material properties and casting technologies. The introduction of nodular iron as a rol1 material took place in our company in 1954. Today, after more than 30 years' experience and further developments, nodular iron rolls have the position as the premium quality product offered to the mini-mill market. The secret of success for these rolls is very well defined manufacturing procedures coupled with strict process and quality control. The introduction of spin casting, additional alloying elements and different inoculations, linked with unique heat treatment operations, has led to new generations of nodular iron grades. These demonstrate improved wear and fire crack resistance. All of these grades can be supplied with ductile iron core material for higher strength and toughness of the roll necks.
