Casting Defect Analyses Conducted in the Nalco Chemical Company Metallurgy Laboratory

Abstract

Nalco Chemical Company supplies water treatment chemicals and metalworking fluids to the steel industry. As a service to customers, the company operates a fully equipped metallurgy laboratory. The main function of this laboratory is to perform failure analysis investigations. The equipment capability, and appropriate training of personnel in the laboratory, allows casting defect analyses to be conducted. Included in this article will be a few different case histories of steel billet casting defect analyses that were performed in the Nalco laboratory. Typical defects found during these analyses included off-corner internal cracks, midway cracks, off-squareness, bulging, surface depressions, and craze cracking. Analysis procedures, interpretation of results obtained, and defect prevention recommendations, were all based upon guidance and training provided by well known experts in the field of continuous casting and casting defect analysis.
