Abstract

The objective of the present study is to characterize a black residue that was accumulated in the Camburi beach in Vitória, ES, Brazil. From this characterization it is intended to identify its origin. The sample was collected by the local environmental agency and provided for this study. Black grains were separated from the original material and also characterized. These samples were characterized via granulometric analysis; its chemical composition was determined using X-ray fluorescence and LECO methods. The samples were also studied via scanning electric microscope, X-ray diffractometry and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The obtained results indicate that most of the residue fraction is in a larger grain size than a typical pellet feed. The chemical analysis shows the relative abundance of Ti (~30 % wt.), Si (~14 %), Fe (10%) and total carbon (0,04%). Thermogravimetric and differential analysis indicated the absence of organic materials such as coal and coke. The X-ray diffractometry shows the presence of quartz, ilmenite, rutile, hematite, magnetite, monazite and zircon. The iron oxides were also confirmed by microprobe analysis (SEM) and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It can be concluded the material is typical from monazite sand and the hematite is associated with natural systems.
