Abstract

The possibility of using chlorination, as applied for treating oxidic ores, in the recovery of refractory metals from slags of tin extraction process, has been investigated. The basic thermodynamics for producing the chlorides of these metals by various chlorination agents like Cl₂ and C or CO, COCl₂, HCl and CCl₄ gases, have been analysed. Studies on the chlorination of the slags by Cl₂ carried out by the authors, have been presented. The use of CCl₄ chlorination at comparatively lower temperature range (500°C - 650°C) of the concerned metal values from the tin slag, has been tested. The results indicate the possibility of high conversion of the refractory metals present in the tin slags.
