Abstract

The shift in emphasis for steelmaking from the conventional route to the electric arc furnace route has brought in its wake a growing demand for pure iron units. This has not only aggravated the situation relating to high grade scrap, but also the availability of pellets and lump ores used predominantly as feedstock for the existing DR processes, which are now in great demand to provide DRI as a substitute for scrap. To satisfy the increase in such requirement, the new natural gas based Circore® and coal based Circofer® DR processes have been developed by Lurgi, for the reduction of low cost and more readily available iron ore fines. The distinguishing feature of both processes is that they employ a two stage fluidized bed reactor system with a circulating fluidized bed reactor in the primary stage and a bubbling fluidized bed reactor in the secondary stage. The paper gives process and plant descriptions as well as a short overview of the development of both processes. In the case of Circore® this development work led within four years from laboratory scale tests via pilot plant tests to the realisation in the first-of-its-kind plant in Trinidad for obtaining virgin iron units at comparatively low capital and operating costs.
