Abstract
Conventional cold strip production facilities are usually integrated in big steel complexes starting with blast fumaces. For many years, VAI has been a successful supplier of these complexes. For about ten years, minimills and integrated compact mills have entered the steel business with a new approach. The varying company philosophies and production facilities which have been the basis of VAI'S orders during the past three years (VOEST-ALPINE STAHL LINZ, Austria, HADEED of Saudi Arabia, DUFERCO of South Africa and BETHLEHEM STEEL of the USA) will be discussed and presented. An overview of mil layouts and design features for different production capacities will be presented to cover the whole production chain through pickling, cold rolling, annealing, skin pass rolling and galvanizing.
