Abstract

Although the conventional electric arc furnace has greatly gained importance as a low-cost melting unit in steelmaking, it is yet but a compromise in respect of economic efficiency and environmental compatibility, which should be superseded by a completely new development. A new type of electric arc furnace on DC basis, the COMELT® EAF, is presented, featuring slanted electrodes and a shaft for integrated scrap preheating. The process allows improved energy efficiency, reduced electrode consumption, enhanced productivity, and better environmental performance through effective off-gas handling and reduced emissions.
