Abstract

The large increase in the production of steel by the electric arc furnace route and the more stringent quality requirements for electric steels have resulted in a scrap shortage particularly for clean new scrap. DRI is considered as an excellent scrap substitute when produced by reduction of iron ore by natural gas. In order to produce DRI of equivalent quality when using coal as reductant, the CRM (Centre de Recherches Métallurgiques) developed the COMET direct reduction process. In the COMET process, iron ore fines and coal are charged in alternate layers in a rotary hearth furnace, and heated by burners. A series of laboratory tests have demonstrated the feasibility and the flexibility of the process and a small scale pilot plant is in operation at CRM in order to assess the basic knowledge of the process. COCKERILL-SAMBRE, ProfilARBED, SIDMAR, Usines Gustave BOEL, and PAUL WURTH as the engineering partner decided to design and build a pilot plant (1.5 t DRI/h) at SIDMAR-Gent to assess the technical and economic feasibility of an industrial plant. The high quality of the COMET DRI, the low production cost and its economical use as clean scrap substitute in the electric arc furnace are its major assets.
