Abstract
The incentives for the achievement of process continuity in steel production are the reduction of energy consumption, the increase of yield, and the improvement of product quality. The world-wide success of the continuous casting technology in the last decade is an excellent example of the trend to eliminate intermediate process steps. The last step in the development of process continuity is the direct linkage of the caster and the hot rolling mill either by hot charging or by direct rolling and great efforts are presently being made in this direction. In Fig.1 the energy consumption of slab reheating and the processing time are compared for the different process routes. Related to cold charging the energy consumption is reduced with hot charging by 45% and with direct rolling by 84%. The energy savings result in a clear economical advantage of hot slab charging and/or direct rolling as compared with cold charging.
