Abstract
The objective of this paper is to present the actions and the operational result developed in the Blast Furnace 2 with the purpose of controlling the formation of inactive load (skull) avoiding the loss of the revenue of its process and consequently the enlargement of the hot metal cost, guaranteeing like this the competitiveness of the company with the reduction of losses for dismissed profit. In this descriptive a historical of the formation of inactive load (scaffold) is presented in the Blast Furnace 2 of CSN, standing out mainly the last campaign (5th campaign). Following that, several phases already lived are shown, from the initial difficulties with the first great skull in April of 1998, the second skull in September of 1998, the development of an own method to remove it, the identification of the first great scaffold formation (high shipment of zinc) to its elimination. In another moment the partial relining of the furnace stands out and there the abrupt reduction is stood out in the skull formation, in a following moment the return of the skull formation is shown and its acceleration with the accident of the Hot Stove 3 in 2002. Finally the other agents 'skull formations' and the implemented actions in 2003, the benefits and the great gains related of these actions are shown.
