Abstract

The SOLLAC Mardyck 80", 5 stand Tandem Cold Mill was one of the most modem mills in the world when it was built in 1973 by SECIM (now VAI Clecim) with Hydraulic Gauge Control on all stands. Almost 30 years later the mil1 is now passing a new step with its conversion by VAI Clecim and Alstom .into a fully continuous rnill with a capacity of 1,600.000 Tonnes per year of High Quality Sheet and Tin-plate products. Production resumed last week of Decernber 1999 with its new configuration that includes several innovative equipment designs such as: * New unwinding section with one pay-off reel and short down-time. * New generation VAI Clecirn DC Flash-butt welder FB21. * 90 " strip diverting tower (9th installed on a continuous or coupled mill). *New design 6 strand strip accumulator with low inertia horizontal cam. * Optimised mill entry design for minimum gauge variation. * New mil exit with the first Carrousel reel installed on a Tandem mill in Europe. *New sleeve loader and two sides strip inspection. This presentation will describe the main technical innovations and show operating results after four months of operations in continuous mode.
