Abstract

Recycling of steel mill residuals in form of agglomerates using the Blast Furnace and BOF is a suitable, reliable and also economic solution to get rid of this problem. BOF dust recycling using the hot briquetting system as well as recycling of different sludge/dust sources using cold briquetting technology and the impacts on the process operation and economy are discussed. The CONTOP® smelting cyclone is an efficient reactor for the recovery of zinc from steel mill dusts. EAF-dust can be utilized without any pre-treatment. No refractory lining is necessary. Dust together with fuel and oxygen reacts at high temperatures to gas containing zinc and other heavy metals and a molten slag. Zinc vapor is re-oxidized and collected in the dust which reaches a zinc oxide content of above 75%. CAESAR is a combination of CONTOP® and EAF Technology with the feature of a direct coupling of these two process steps. The wastes are injected into the cyclone to pre-reduce and melt the waste oxides. Heavy metals leave the system with the off-gas stream. The slag is then further reduced to metallic iron in the EAF. This process is therefore especially suited for residuals high in iron and also in heavy metal content.
