Abstract

This study evaluates the correlation between microstructure and grain size in an Al–0.6%Si–0.5%Fe–0.05%Cu alloy produced by conventional casting from high-purity aluminum (99.8%) and solidified in a metal mold under high cooling rates. A homogenization heat treatment at 400 °C for 4 h was applied with the aim of investigating the microstructural evolution. The characterization was carried out by optical microscopy after etching with Keller's reagent, while the grain size was determined by the Heyn linear intercept method with the aid of ImageJ software. In the as-cast condition, the microstructure was composed of an α-Al matrix with the presence of Fe-rich intermetallic phases distributed in interdendritic regions. After heat treatment, a reduction in microsegregation and greater homogeneity in the distribution of the intermetallics was observed, attributed to diffusive redistribution processes rather than complete dissolution of these phases. The average grain size showed a slight increase from 50.69 µm to 52.75 µm, indicating limited grain growth associated with the thermal mobility of the boundaries. The results demonstrate that homogenization treatment at 400 °C promotes microstructural uniformity with a reduced impact on grain growth, preserving the refined structural characteristics of the alloy.
