Cost Reduction and Increase of Productivity by Transition from 3 to 2 Blast Furnaces Operation at Rogesa Dillinger Hüttenwerke, Germany

Abstract

The company of Rogesa (Hot Metal Company Saar) has been founded in 1985 for the purpose of low cost hot metal production at the location of Dillingen for two steel companies: AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke and Saarstahl AG, located 20 km from each other. Also the coke oven plant at Dillingen ZKS (Central Coking Plant Saar) has been constructed by different owners for supplying coke to the Rogesa Blast Furnaces. There has been a three respectively four Blast Furnaces operation modus since the beginning. The increased demand of hot metal and at the same time cost saving activities lead to the decisions of the increasing of the sintering capacity, the enlargement of the two bigger Blast Furnaces and the transformation of No. 3 Blast Furnace into a stand by furnace. Furthermore the composition and the quality of burden have been optimized in order to meet the demand of low cost hot metal. Finally many technological developments have been carried out to optimize Blast Furnaces operation. All those measures have been made to overcome the disadvantages for raw material logistics caused by the location of the Dillinger Hüttenwerke and Saarstahl steel companies in the south west of Germany.
