Abstract

The composition of phases is an important element of metallic material quality. The amounts of phases and their rapports are responsible for important properties of metallic materials as are hardness, toughness, thermal and dimensional stability and durability. To provide a certain combination of material properties the conventional heat treatment and also the cryogenic treatment were applied. The cryogenic treatment has been used for many years to improve the service life of tool steels. Despite this fact, its mechanism is still subject to strong debate and is further completed by scientists. The present work aims at realising of a comparative study of the influence of cryogenic treatment on the microstructure and properties of high speed tool steels based on reviewing of the state of art in the field of cryogenics. The results of the own researches in the field of cryogenic treatment at -70°, -120° and -196°c on high speed tool steels together with the analyses of phases variation with cryogenic temperature are also shown.
