Abstract
Within the last 6 years a large number of DC-furnaces has been installed and commissioned in various parts of the world; none so far in South America though. This paper presents a brief history of the development of this technology. Its principal components with special emphasis of various concepts of bottom electrodes are described. Update of status on current installations worldwide is given additionally with some operational results especially with regard to graphite electrode consumption. These results are compared with consumption figures from high productivity AC-furnaces and also related to theoretical considerations by computer simulation of electrode columns using finite element methods.
