Abstract

Iron ore pelletizing is one of the most energy-intensive stages of the Brazilian mineral value chain, and monitoring it through specific energy consumption (SEC) and aggregate total consumption does not separate the effects of production scale, product mix and technological efficiency. This study applies the Log Mean Divisia Index decomposition (additive LMDI-I) and an ODEX-type index to the energy performance of an industrial plant, with natural gas converted by the lower heating value measured on site, across two windows separated by the shutdown of operations: 2012–2015 and 2021–2025. The activity effect accounts for 82.1% of the cumulative variation in consumption in the first window and 69.7% in the second; the structure effect does not exceed 1% in either window; and the intensity effect is substantial and positive in the restart window (+28.7 thousand toe), concentrated in the transition from 2021 to 2022, indicating a net deterioration in energy performance. The index ranges from 0.85 to 1.05, a range similar to that reported in the literature for a mature continuous-process industry. The combined application of both instruments yields a more informative diagnosis than aggregate indicators used in isolation.
