Abstract
Steel producers are constantly looking for incremental improvements in quality, efticiency and reliability. Surface quality improvernents on hot strip have recently been made through improvements in the descale process. These improvements have been realized primarily through higher pressures and flow rates in the descale system. Generating high pressure, high flow water for proper descaling action requires sophisticated hydraulic systems. Protecting these hydraulic systems from shock loading and over-heating is a high priority item. Using bypass valves to unload the descale pumps helps to achieve this goal. This paper explains how the bypass valve is used to protect the pumps in two typical pumping configurations. The paper also illustrates the significant economical benefits of adding pump bypass valves to the descale system. Real life examples and calculations are used to show the energy savings and efficiency gains that can be achieved by using pump bypass valves.
