Abstract

This study investigates the reduction performance and mechanical strength of self-reducing briquettes containing pellet feed and sugarcane bagasse biochar produced in a pilot plant. The briquettes were subjected to interrupted tests at different temperatures and under different atmospheric conditions (inert and reducing), allowing the analysis of phase evolution, metallization degree and carbon content, compressive strength, and microstructure throughout heating. The results indicated that increasing the biochar content significantly enhanced the reduction performance. This effect was further intensified under a reducing atmosphere, which also contributed to improved mechanical strength of the agglomerates at high temperatures. However, the biocarbon derived from biochar proved to be highly reactive, playing a central role in the iron oxide reduction mechanism. Finally, at high temperatures, B10 exhibited the highest strength, indicating a more favorable intermediate condition between reduction efficiency and structural integrity.
