Abstract

One of the environmental problems most difficult to be avoided at conventional coke ovens are diffuse gaseous emissions, which mainly appear at the coke oven closures such as the coke oven doors, the ascension pipe lids and at the charging hole lids. These emissions are especially hazardous because they are hardly visible but contain a high level of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which can cause cancer. The main cause and driving force of these emissions is the pressure in the oven chambers, resulting from the raw gas generated during the carbonization process. Driven by this pressure, the raw gas is penetrating the seals of the diverse coke oven closures and contaminating the environment.How can these emissions be reduced?
