Abstract

The development of forged hardened steel roll metallurgy to meet special rolling mill requirements is occurring at a dynamic rate. The metallurgy of the forged steel roll directly influences mill productivity and acceptance of rolled products. This paper presents an overview of new forged roll technology and addresses historical perspective, roll testing methodology, roll heat treatment, and special rolling mill requirements. It concludes with recommendations for roll manufacturers and users to maximize the value of current and future forged steel roll technology developments.
