Abstract

The development of wire rod for steel wool in ACINDAR S.A. is presented. Quality requirements for this peculiar steel grade are discussed on the basis of different utilizations of steel wool and on its typical shaving process. Considerations are made on the influence of steel properties and inclusions behavior on variables like tool life, tool chattering or burning, cuttings, powder formation, etc. Features of steel design are commented. The process in ACINDAR by the route Direct Reduction–Electric Arc Furnace–Ladle Furnace–Continuous Casting–Rolling–Drawing is described with emphasis on subjects like obtaining a low content of residuals, minimizing the alumina content in microinclusions, measures taken to avoid the formation of macroinclusions, effect of CaSi injection in these steels, etc.
