Abstract

Developments in refractory products for the 90’s and beyond. Alkali resistant products have been and is an important in the field of steel plant refractories. For continuously operating furnaces, improved corrosion resistance and higher mechanical properties are essential. The paper will focus on advances in materials, applications and installation techniques for improving refractory performance in various iron and steel processes. The refractory industry being the backbone of 1990’s various trends are emerging that influence its design, application and installation methods. Key factors are shifting from monolithic to ceramic lining materials. More developments in casting, welding, gunning and spraying methods have been applied for refractories. Many furnace areas utilizing slag environments demand high resistance to corrosion and erosion. Some of the current trends that affect the types of alloy being melted and the equipment used include higher strength alloys, increased recycling of alloys, higher melting temperatures, increased alloy cleanliness and higher casting speeds.
