Abstract
To achieve a 40 years operational life of coke oven batteries, Usinor and CPM have developed methods and tools to quantify coke oven battery ageing. A diagnostic survey gives, once a year, an overview of the battery conditions. This survey includes flue temperature measurements, raw gas leakages quantification, expansion of battery structure and evaluation of refractory damages through visual and endoscopic inspection. The endoscopic inspection allows the observation of inaccessible areas, gives the right estimation of the refractory damages and guides the choice of the repair technique. A flexible non-cooled endoscope, the Videofil® machine, was specially developed for the assessment of the flue wall damages. Based on the previous measurements, a quantitative evaluation of the battery ageing is provided through a specific software as well as recommendations for battery repair.
