Abstract

Aluminum-Si alloys are widely used in industry, but their use under high thermal conditions requires an understanding of their structural, electrical, and mechanical stability. This article analyzed the macrostructure, electrical conductivity, and tensile strength (TS) of Al-0.5%Si and Al-0.5%Si-0.3%Ni alloys in the unheated (UHT) condition and after annealing at 200 °C for 2 hours. The alloys were cast in a metal mold, subjected to chemical analysis, and macrostructural characterization. Machined billets were cold-rolled to a final diameter of 3 mm for testing. The results indicated that the addition of 0.3% Ni promoted larger equiaxed grains in the as-cast macrostructure. After annealing, both alloys increased their electrical conductivity, reaching 65.40% IACS in the Al-Si alloy and 64.80% IACS in the Ni alloy. In the tensile test, the Al-0.5%Si alloy reduced the LRT by 8.58% (from 214.00 to 195.62 MPa), while the alloy with Ni reduced it by 24.63% (from 254.23 to 191.60 MPa). It is concluded that annealing at 200 °C could induce a possible partial recovery and softening of the matrix by reducing work hardening, without sufficient thermal energy to activate the microstructural anchoring expected by the Ni-rich phases.
