Abstract

Due to recent high demand and spiraling high prices, there is increased motivation for utilizing relatively lower volatile coals for PCI application. Even though high volatile coals are generally known to combust more efficiently, there is no clearly established relationship between coal volatile matter and their combustion efficiency particularly when coals of different volatile matter are blended. Experimental work was conducted to study the combustion behavior of two Australian coals in a drop tube furnace (DTF) at 1473 K specifically to identify the effect of blending on their char characteristics and burnout under controlled laboratory conditions. Coal burnout was related to physical and chemical characteristics of pyrolyzed char and advanced analysis of coal properties. Further impact of coal blending on char properties and their implications on consumption in a blast furnace are also discussed. This work is an ongoing project at the UNSW, supported by Anglo Coal Australia.
