Abstract

The purpose of electromagnetic stirring in continuous casting is to improve surface and inner quality of products manufactured from strand cast steel. In some cases processing is also simplified and yield increased. In today’s strand casting (EMS) mold stirring (MEMS), strand stirring (SEMS) and final stage of solidification (FEMS and slab mold braking (EMBR) are in use. These effects technology give different metallurgical results although overlapping effects exist. Local conditions such as strand size, grades, products and quality problems are of importance when investigating which stirring technique to apply in a certain case. The purpose of this paper is to describe the individual and common characteristics of the different stirrers. Very roughly they can be described as follows: EMS refines the center solidification structure, reduces centre line segregation and the size of centre cavities. MEMS removes slag inclusions, pinholes and blowholes below the surface. Apart from that, small strand sizes effects similar to EMS are achieved. FEMS will in some cases reduce centre line segregation when used as a complement to EMS or MEMS. EMBR reduces the amount of sub-surface and inner slag inclusions in slabs.
