Abstract

Environmental standards and requirements have been raised over the last several years, particularly for the new investments and production facilities in the iron- and steel making industry. For the future a further tightening of requirements is to be expected. Siemens VAI provides integrated environmental solutions for steelmaking and it has always been a driving force of development and innovation to make the processes most efficient with regard to environmental performance as well as operating costs. Nowadays phrases like, greenhouse gases, climate change, energy efficiency and emission control have become a decisive factor for the steelmakers. Sustainable investment decisions have to be based on uncertain forecasts regarding resource, energy prices and unknown future environmental boundary conditions. The paper will focus on pros and cons of wet vs. dry dedusting, CO-gas recovery for LD steelmaking, heat recovery and heat-to-power solutions for EAF and LD steelmaking. Solutions and visions to minimize greenhouse gases and stack emission will be discussed.
