Abstract

The current study investigates the combustion performance and properties of a Brazilian subbituminous coal (Faxinal Mine) for use as feedcoals in Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) in the tuyeres of the blast furnace. Because of the restrictions of some chemical aspects like high ashes and alkalis contents of the Faxinal coal, one mode of its utilization for PCI can be in coal blends with low ashes imported coals. In this study two imported high rank coals were utilized. For this purpose the individuals coals have been characterized and tested for their combustion reactivity in a drop tube furnace. The results have been related to thermogravimetric tests run under air in order to explore the forecast ability of thermogravimetric tests to rank coal performance under high heating rates, and high temperature conditions approaching in some aspects those typical of pulverized fuel combustion and blast furnace injection. Coal blends, in various proportions, with Faxinal coal and imported coals were also carried out in a thermogravimetric analyzer in order to evaluate the reactivity to CO₂. Considering the chemical restrictions for PCI coals, the content of Faxinal coal in blend is viable up to a maximum of 50%. The burnouts achieved in the DTF at the various atmospheres tested were significantly higher for the Brazilian coal than the imported coal, indicating that the former is easier to burn. The reaction rate for Faxinal coal tested by thermogravimetry at 1050°C and CO₂ atmosphere is much higher than the reaction rate for imported coals. The respective blends presented values of reactivity proportionals to the Faxinal content.
