Abstract
To contribute in the development of more sustainable pavement structures, several studies have aimed to partially replace natural aggregates by residues and/or by-products in asphalt mixtures. One possibility is the use of the air-cooled blast furnace slags (ACBFS). Despite its good mechanical characteristics, ACBFS shows poor adhesiveness to the asphalt binder, according to visual results obtained after the ABNT NBR 12583 procedure. As a result, asphalt mixtures containing ACBFS failure in moisture damage tests. To improve binder-ACBFS adhesiveness, some materials can be added to the mixture. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the effects of the addition of different fillers with varied chemical composition (hydrated lime, and two steel by-products powders) in the moisture resistance of asphalt mixtures. For that, the mostly used moisture induced damage (MID) test (following DNIT 180 standard) was performed into four Superpave mixture designed asphalt mixtures. Moreover, to correlate the filler’s chemical components with mixture’s resistance to MID, digital image processing (DIP) and analysis was done in the aggregate particles after bituminous binder adhesiveness tests. Results show that adding fillers increased the tensile strength ratio of the mixtures. Also, DIP analysis showed a strong relation between aggregate-binder adhesiveness and the chemical composition of the materials, especially iron and calcium oxides which reduce moisture-induced damage.
