EVALUATION OF SOFTENING AND MELTING BEHAVIOR OF BLAST FURNACE METALLIC BURDEN

Abstract

The cohesive zone in the blast furnace, where ferrous burden softens, melts and drips, is responsible for great part of the pressure loss of gas into reactor. The knowledge of this phenomenon and burden’s characteristics that affect its behavior in this furnace region is fundamental for optimization of the blast furnace performance. In this context, aiming to offer to its customers ferrous burden solutions based on products of high added value, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD invested in the acquisition of technology for evaluation high temperature behavior of blast furnace ferrous burden. After analysis of the available options of equipments/technology in the market, CVRD chose NSC’s technology (Nippon Steel Corporation), which represents the current state of art. The techno-commercial cooperation agreement settled between these companies included equipment supplying, training and technology transfer. This work presents a brief description of the technology acquired by CVRD that is available for the development of blast furnace ferrous burden solutions. It also reports the results of tests performed with different kinds of pellets using this technology on NSC’s equipment.
