Abstract

Material recycling plays a fundamental role in sustainable development, with aluminum being widely used and recycled, particularly in the packaging industry. In this study, two ingots were produced from post-consumer AA3004 aluminum beverage cans: one in its original condition and the other with the addition of 3 wt.% nickel, aiming to analyze the microstructural evolution of the material. The processing route involved collection, cleaning, comminution, compaction, melting, and solidification in a copper mold. Chemical characterization was carried out using Optical Microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The samples were prepared through metallographic techniques for microstructural evaluation. Microstructural analysis revealed a dendritic matrix in both ingots. In ingot 1, the Al₆(Mn,Fe) intermetallic phase predominated, whereas in ingot 2 the formation of Al₃Ni was identified, associated with the presence of Ni, Mn, and Fe along the grain boundaries. In addition, microporosity was observed in both samples. The results demonstrated the influence of nickel on the microstructure of the recycled alloy.
