Abstract

On December 1st 1999 COSIPA awarded a contract to VAI for the expansion of Steelplant No. 2. The expansion project included a new scrap yard, a 160 t converter, secondary metallurgy unit with aluminum heating, two strand continuous caster and auxiliary facilities. This paper focuses on the converter No. 7 and its auxiliary installation, highlighting the technological aspects of the new equipment and the operational results gained. The layout configuration of the new steel plant allows a total production in Steelplant No. 2 of 4.5 Mio tons of liquid steel per year. The choice of the new plant configuration was a result of joint analysis of COSIPA and VAI, making use of the VAI logistic tool LORA. The new layout allows independent and interchangeable operation of the existing and new parts of the steel plant and the expansion was carried out in a way to not interfere with the operation of the existing steel plant. During the expansion project in 2000 and 2001, a production record was reached in the converter plant. The main technological equipment is the converter No. 7 with a VAI-CON® Link suspension system that was also installed at the existing converters No. 5 and 6 during the expansion phase. The new converter No. 7 is also equipped with bottom stirring with independent tuyere control, a sublance system and a quick exchange oxygen lance system. The auxiliary equipment installed includes a new scrap yard serving all three converters, a relocated desulfurization station, hot metal receiving and charging bay, primary and secondary dedusting systems and secondary metallurgy for alloying, heating, desulfurization and shape control. Further installations include overhead cranes, transfer cars and ladle maintenance equipment. The automation system was integrated with the existing system, and includes a level 2 system and communication with the existing level 3 system. The short commissioning period of the overall steel plant allowed a fast production ramp up and start of commercial production with the new converter in January 2002.
